Belmont House Background

Belmont House

Looking out over The Cobb, Belmont House has a remarkable story to tell as part of the history of Lyme Regis. In the twentieth century it was home to author John Fowles and it was here that he finished writing The French Lieutenant’s Woman. By the time Fowles died in 2005 the building was structurally in poor condition and the gardens were wild and overgrown.

The Landmark Trust acquired Belmont House and have restored the villa to the form known by Mrs Coade, pioneer of the artificial stone that bears her name. The building is again a place of real beauty, a fabulous monument to one of the great female entrepreneurs of the Georgian Period.

Landmark’s restoration of Belmont House is recognised as an exemplar project demonstrating the value and sustainability of safeguarding historically significant buildings. The project received the prestigious ‘Restoration of a Georgian Building in an Urban Setting Award’ at the Georgian Group Awards in 2015 and the ‘Building Conservation Award’ in the Royal Institute of Chartered Surveyors Awards for the South West in spring 2016.

An excellent job in every respect. We are both extremely pleased with the work.

The job looks really well done and your roofers worked hard to get the job done so well. The weather was against them, but they fitted the work in.
